Committed Christians

Are you a committed Christian? There is no other kind of Christian. Becoming a Christian begins with a gift from God to us and at the same time, includes our commitment to Him. Some might argue about whether our commitment is a gift of God or our accomplishment. I believe that He makes us new creatures who are willing and able to be committed unto Him.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Except our flesh. Our flesh is just a temporary container of the new creature.

2 Corinthians 4:7: But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

Romans 7:18: For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Our flesh does not want to be committed to God and as often as it can it will interfere with that commitment.

2 Timothy 1:6: Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; 9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: 11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. 12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

The passage began with Paul*s reminder to Timothy to stir up the gift of God which was in him and ended with God*s keeping power and Timothy*s commitment. We need to be reminded of the same things. Perhaps every day and perhaps many times every day and every time our flesh wins a battle. It is needful to remember everything between verse 7 and verse 11 too. If we are afraid, it is not God*s doing. If we are weak, it is not His doing. If we are unloving, it is not His doing. If we are foolish, it is not His doing. If we are ashamed we should be ashamed of that. In a sense, we are Gods prisoners. We belong to Him. We will suffer afflictions but it is God who has called us for His purposes. But the conclusion and the thing we need to be reminded of the most and the most often is to commit EVERYTHING unto Him.

1 Peter 4:19: Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
